Psychoanalytic approach :)

I approached the poem "Bitch" by Carolyn Kizer in a psychoanalytic sense where I concentrated on the ID. The ID is a term first used by Sigmund Freud in his structural model also containing the EGO and SUPER-EGO. The ID is the part of the mind in which innate instinctive impulses and primary processes are manifest. In the poem Bitch we repeatedly see the author express basic human feeling of which she has no control of her primitive stage. Where she switches between the id the ego and the super ego. To explain further the ID is the part of you which is primitive where the Super Ego is what one should do, like a conscious. And the Ego is the balance between the ID and the Super Ego.
In the poem the writer expresses her ID through a dog that is uncontrollable and seems to dislike then like again. She uses the dog because dogs are instinctual animals which give you the feeling of primitive  Which give you a feeling of unconditional love from a dog. I can tell that her most primitive instincts of wanting to be with the man through her interpretations of a metaphorical dog barking. The ID was focused as a dog because dogs seem to be very primitive they bark at those they don’t like and whine for what they want.
The feeling that this “dog” creates is the most of primitive not even using words that almost of a feeling that her emotions are animal like. The main words that make a difference in the poem are, words like bitch, barking, whining, wanting, etc. in the poem because these words are noises and vulgar words which she expresses in her mind so no other can hear. she acts like the ego but in her mind she is all of them at the same time. In the poem she states that they are apart because some bad things happened, or at least its implied through her interpretation of the dog barking and missing him not being able to return to him. The fact that she misses him is primitive even after the she had suffered being with him. The fact that she stays away is due to her EGO, and Super EGO because both of these are telling her what the right thing it is to do and ego because the ego is the balance of ones emotions, and actions.
The poem is affected by the type of writing that uses these basic words that one would associate with an animal, and by doing so the writer affect the poem in a way that makes the character of the story seem as if she herself had animal instincts you experience this with words such as bitch, or phrases like "I yank the dog by the chain". The way she pulls back on the leash of the animal, The animal being her feelings. You can get a very good idea through the metaphor the writer uses that the woman in the story has ID qualities such as she barks hysterically and she whimpers to be with him. Anything compared to animals would seem primitive and in a sense of one basic interest. Therefor the character if affected by the writing style the writer uses, because the writer uses simple words to give emotions to the reader, guiding them through feeling and emotions one should feel while reading the poem “Bitch”. She uses this type of writing because she wants to sway your emotion in order to orchestrate feeling that correlate with the poem.

Feminist Approach

Feminist Approach
Women portrayal in movies as well as in books has change through one, their roles in movies and books. Two, in recent films movie producers have shown women’s independency and bravery by going against old tradition. Three, the way they are seen. As appose to weak, subordinates, not equal, unable to handle tasks etc. The new point of view is ambiguous and can be anything you would want such as a, superhero, evil villain, witch, savior, goddess, powerful, sleazy, smart, and many more.
In the olden day’s women roles were limited because old tradition had an effect on how women were portrayed, they would not have very big roles and were mostly shown as house wives or princesses who are passive and ditsy, or a victim who is always in peril. Old films show gender roles most commonly in Disney films where the princes who are depicted as very good looking is in need of help and is always saved by a prince who is strong and brave. In recent films woman have become equal and hold much bigger roles. Such as Electra, a comic super hero from marvel, who holds the balance of good and evil. She hold the balance between good and evil because she has the  power to  foresee the future but she must first choose a side and depending on what side she chooses it is where the balance between good and evil will shift. The reason why women are being portrayed differently is all because of time. In the earlier years women weren’t accepted and were viewed as housemaids also as stay at home wives. Back in the day women were not viewed as equals. They were viewed as under men and not as smart or not the same worth as men. But all has changed thought time because women from time to time have shown their worth especially through their work ethic and their intelligence and so on. Society has become more accepting of women there for portraying them in better or higher standing roles.
The higher roles that women play is all due to the fact that society has accepted the fact that women have grown into independency. For example back in the olden day the women was expected to  be stay at home house wives and take care of the kids, make the meals and to just in a basic sense work for men. But the fact that society has allowed women to progress it has also allowed them to enhance themselves. Now that women have the opportunity to rise in ranks to the point where they are equal and in some cases better and smarter than men they have the opportunity to become the break maker. Now society has labeled mothers as super moms due to all that they do in the small amount of time, such as take care of the kids, take them to practice, work, volunteer, be a good wife, and make breakfast, lunch and dinner. Women are now portrayed as super do to the fact that they have so much on their plate and are still able to read a book and work out on their spare time.
Nether the less women have become and envy of society. And when you are an envy of society people want to write about you and make you out to look amazing. Now in modern day era the women roles in movies have changed drastically, even in cartoon all the roles are changing. Disney recently has released a movie where a woman wasn’t just waiting on a prince and sat around hoping their prince charming would walk along. In the film The Princess & The Frog, the woman is a hard worker and is also the first black woman to be the protagonist. In a Disney film the princess wants to open a restaurant and has a lot of ideas of wanting to own a business. Not only has Disney caught on to the move, but also Pixar has joined in with their movie called BRAVE, the story is about a Scottish girl who is to be wed to the winner of an archery competition, being enraged to a lucky shot she joins in for her own hand and shoots the center of at least three target. Not only was she standing up for herself she was breaking old tradition. By making these kinds of movies you show that women have a choice, that they do have a say in what their future is. If you were to see any of these movies with a female protagonist you will see that all my points are proven.  Let’s break down the movie Tangled. My first point being women portrayals in movies have changed, In Tangled the Rapunzel is the main character and she is the princess who wants to go out and see the world. My second point was that they break tradition and they go about what they want through bravery, In Tangled she goes against what her mother said, that being that she must never go out and stay in a castle. Knowingly she gathers up her bravery and goes against her mother’s clutches and goes out to see the world ultimately finding out that she was really a princess and was kidnaped by the witch.  The third point was that in the olden days they were portrayed as weak, and in the movie Tangled she is anything but weak. Along with her trusty pan she goes around hitting people with and persuading a lot of fearful men in a bar to encourage her to follow her dream.
I believe that opposed to the olden days the film industry has changed over time due to the acceptance of women. Through the acceptance of women the roles of women have changed not only in books and in movies but also in society. Women have not only have risen up in ranks by becoming protagonists in movies but by also running for presidency. Women are no longer seen as weak nor under men, They are seen as equals and of great caliber among the best of the best.

The Wife of Bath's Tale

This story starts out with a knight going on quest and he took a woman by force. the punishment normally would be to behead the man, but the queen begged the king to let the knight be his, to kill or save. she got her wish and she said she will let him live if he could find out what it was that woman wanted the most. The knight set out and found a old woman and she said "i will tell you most what women want if you do me a favor if the answer is correct, he agreed and brought the answer to the queen. The answer was that woman want to govern over their own husbands, and he was right, he returned to the old woman and said what do you want from me, she said she want him to be her husband he wanted anything but that, but in the end, he was a man of his word and he was unpleased, and by the end of the story, she teaches the man a lesson to let the woman govern over the man, he said to her do as you please be this or that and she became young and his faithful and lovable wife.

New Begginings, Redemption

These Stories focus on how how destroyed and created everything, I see Noah as the hero and god as a helping character. In the story of The Flood, god is unappeased with man and decides to destroy everything, but god decides that there is a family that lives through his way. He then asks them to build a huge arch and then bring 2 of each animal along. The moral of this story I feel is that as long as you are good you will be given many second chances.
In the second story is a tower of babel which stuck me as a purposefully made it hard for people to understand each other so that we do not have everything in our possession.
Abraham and Isaac story stuck me as weird because god asked a man to basically chose between his son or his loyalty and his loyalty to go gave him his son. to me the moral of this story was that find where your loyalty is and then with your strong trust you will be saved by it.

Compare and contrast

Compare and contrast
In both The Odyssey and Gilgamesh they are both mythological heroes both of them start out with imperfections so that the reader can connect to, and along the way become stronger as well a even more heroic therefore being transformed

Arch type
both stories share similar arch types along the way such as kalypso in Odyssey and Shamhat in Gilgamesh are temptresses and How Odyssyeus and Gilgamesh are heroes, how Athena helps Odysseus and how Gilamesh's mother helps him,

Relevant today?
This story is relevant up to date because people love to see someone not so perfect become something better, sort of like a hope for people that them themselves can also become better people, heroes in their own way. having to go through tough obstacles and triumphing. The main reason i believe that these stories are relevant today is because people love to put themselves in the feet if the hero and imagine themselves becoming better as well. People can just relate to these heroes and their difficult paths that one must go in order to get through life.

Aunt Jennifer's Tigers

Aunt Jennifer's Tigers to me seems like shes talking about her children or something shes looking after. To me the poem seems to relate that, what she is talking about is her children. How they are her shining diamonds in a new world. She speaks of motherly things she does , like how mother picked the splinter from their hand to the time they got married and how when she dies her "tiger" who were taught by her will go on living.

Burlap Sack

When I think of burlap I think of a sack of potatoes because to me burlap is a type of material in which the trees are wrapped in or what people use to carry such thing. The way it was used in the poem Burlap Sack I feel as if it were baggage, baggage like that of what a person carries with them their whole lives because of mistakes. When the writer wrote " Heavier if left out in the rain." means the more you let a problem linger the heavier it will get. Also when the writer writes"What would it be to take the bride and leave behind the heavy dowry?" to me means to take the bride but not any of the joys that should come with a wife, to leave what a wife brings with her. and the last line to I gives a feeling of finally letting go and being happy.

About me.

Hello my name is Fredy Torres and I am 21 years old. I came to NDNU on a quest to explore the vast lands of knowledge. I am from East Palo Alto and college is very close to me, I get to see my family frequently and am very happy to have chosen this school. I've come a long way not for myself, but because I owe it to those who have supported me throughout the years, also with an up and coming nephew who watches me from the sidelines. I am here to get the best grade I can possibly produce. It is my goal to keep the A that I start out with.
